How Recruiters Actually Search: Boolean Strings Explained

A recruiter with a full inbox doesn't read applications top to bottom. They write a search query, the same kind you'd use in a legal or academic database, and only the results it returns get read at all. Understanding that query, literally, operator by operator, changes what "optimizing your resume" actually means.

Recruiters don't read a stack of resumes. They query a database.

Jobscan's 2025 recruiter survey found that 99.7% of the 384 recruiters it surveyed use filters inside their ATS or a similar tool to find candidates, and 76.4% start that filtering by searching skills straight from the job description. What most job seekers don't see is the query itself. It isn't a vague vibe search. It's a literal Boolean string, built from the same AND/OR/NOT logic used in legal research and academic databases, and knowing exactly how it works is the single most concrete way to understand why some qualified resumes surface and others don't.

The three operators that run almost every search

LinkedIn's own Recruiter Help documentation confirms the core operators: AND narrows a search to results containing every term ("project manager" AND PRINCE2), OR broadens it to results containing any listed term ("project manager" OR "programme manager"), and NOT excludes a term entirely (NOT intern). Quotation marks lock in an exact phrase, and parentheses group terms so complex logic parses correctly, the same way it would in a spreadsheet formula.

A realistic recruiter query might read: ("project manager" OR "programme manager") AND (PRINCE2 OR PMP) AND "stakeholder management" NOT intern. Every one of those terms is doing real work, and a resume missing even the OR-grouped variant of a term it should contain simply never appears in that result set. LinkedIn's documentation is also explicit about what it doesn't support: no wildcards (*) and no +/- shorthand, so there's no clever symbol trick that substitutes for actually having the right words on the page.

X-Ray search: finding you outside the platform's own search box

Recruiters aren't limited to a platform's native search bar. X-Ray search uses Google's own site: operator to search inside a specific site's indexed pages directly, for example site:linkedin.com/in "data engineer" "Snowflake" "Chicago" returns public LinkedIn profile pages matching all three terms, combining Google's full search syntax with a target site's content.

This technique has gotten more limited on LinkedIn specifically since the platform restricted how much of its content Google indexes, starting in January 2024, so recruiters increasingly reach for it on sites that stay richly indexed instead, GitHub and Stack Overflow are the two most cited examples for technical roles. The broader point still holds regardless of which site it's run against: your professional footprint is discoverable through the exact same AND/OR/NOT logic no matter which search box it's typed into.

What this means for how you write your resume and profile

Because Boolean search is literal, not conceptual, the single highest-leverage habit is writing out both the acronym and the full term for every credential and skill that matters ("Search Engine Optimization (SEO)", "Project Management Professional (PMP)"), the same principle covered in our breakdown of Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, and Taleo. A recruiter's OR-grouped search is built to catch variants, but only the variants that actually exist somewhere on your resume or profile.

It also argues against cleverness for its own name. A recruiter's query is built from the mainstream way your field is actually described, not an inventive rebrand of your job title. Prioritizing the standard, widely searched term over a more original-sounding one in your headline, skills section, and top bullets is what gets you caught by the largest number of realistic AND/OR combinations a recruiter would actually type.

Test it yourself

You can run this exact logic on yourself before a recruiter ever does. Build a Boolean string from your target job posting's own language, your target title OR its common variants, AND your two or three most important named skills, and search it on LinkedIn or via a Google X-Ray query against your own public profile.
